Italy Overview | Property in Italy
The country has proven to be very popular with property investors from the UK and a selection of other countries within the European Union. Calabria has a selection of desirable areas and give investments the opportunity to live the Dolce Vita lifestyle in the southwest regions of the country.
Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France
in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia
in the north-east. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea,
the Sardinian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian Sea
and the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east.
Italy has always been considered one of
the most desirable and therefore one of the most expensive places to
buy a holiday home, or so you might think…
As a long standing member of the EU you
might expect property prices to be similar to that of Spain or France,
and to a certain extent, if you were looking at some of the established
fashionable resorts of Rome, Florence and Milan, you would be right.
Traditionally Italy has had a large north/south divide with the south
being seen as the poorer cousin of the wealthy north.
This however is set to change, the local
and regional authorities recognise the potential that tourism and property
investment has in pushing the regions economy forward. Huge sums of
government money has been poured into Southern Italy since the War,
modernising infra-structure, transport communications, new motorways
linking the seaside towns to the national network and airports, industrial
grants, irrigation schemes, and modern communications have been put
in place. Europe’s largest bridge is to be built, linking Sicily to
the mainland. Both Easyjet and Ryanair are already operating direct
flights into Italy with other budget airlines sure to follow. Ryanair
are already offering direct flights to the southern Italian airport
of Lamezia.
With a southern European climate, dramatic
coastlines, a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle, government funded improvements
to infrastructure and amenities, a number of planned golf courses, established
and growing tourist market, a strong demand for rental property during
the holiday season and property prices that have a long way to go before
they come close to matching that of their northern neighbours now is
the perfect time to buy in southern Italy.
Property in Calabria | For Sale
With prosperity slowly moving south, early
investors have already recognised the potential of areas such as Calabria,
occupying the toe of Italy, it is an area of extraordinary beauty, rich
in a history that dates back to its role at the heart of the Magna Graecia
of Classical antiquity, and far further back. Explore its valleys as
you search for Italian property for sale and you will discover a culture
seemingly untouched by recent centuries. The peninsula, which reaches
out to kick Sicily has coast on three sides of course. The coastal regions
rise up to rugged mountains, home to ancient villages and abandoned
villages and farmhouses.
At the very toe of Italy, and facing Sicily
across the Strait of Messina, is Reggio di Calabria, the provincial
capital. With a population of 180,000 this is Calabria’s biggest town
by some way. Unspoilt, idyllic and the best kept secret in Italy, Calabria
is one of the most beautiful areas of the country, with a relaxed Italian
way of life and perfect year round weather it is surprising to learn
that the area is also home to a number of ski resorts. There is a beautifully
restored seafront and promenade that faces Messina and Sicily across
the Strait. Its position is certain to make Reggio a holiday hotspot
and this is certainly a town to watch for those with an eye on Italian
property.
