You will have all seen the media coverage of the current media coverage of the recent disturbances in Cairo our director Frank Crowley has made some statements about the events:
1) It doesn’t affect the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada & Sharm el Sheikh. It is the same as in January. There was no protest in Hurghada & Sharm then, and there isn’t any now. The protests are in big cities like Cairo, not in small Red Sea tourist resorts like Hurghada & Sharm el Sheikh, with a small populations and where the locals earn very good money and quality of life is highly rated. 2) Even in Cairo, it's in a very small area of the city, mainly Tahrir Square and near the Interior Ministry (a bit like Trafalgar Square and Whitehall in London). There are about 16 million people living in Cairo and its suburbs so for the overwhelming majority of people in Cairo, it's business as usual. Even in Tahrir Square, you can see Sky News or BBC News journalists happily standing and reporting live just wearing a shirt. 3) The clashes we see on TV are near the Interior Ministry between some of the poor people in Cairo and the riot police which is despised as they are ruthless and shoot at their own people so unfortunately there have been casualties and injuries as a result. Scenes of fighting and cars or buildings on fire make "good TV" so the media like to show those images over and over again but the reality is that we're talking about a couple of streets and just a limited number of people actually clashing compared to the 16 Million who live in Cairo or the 84 Million in Egypt as a whole. 4) The genuine political protests are because some Egyptians feel that the pace of political reforms is too slow. Great progress has been made already and the parliamentary elections are starting next week. They will be staged over 3 dates depending on the location (November, December, January) then the elections for the “Upper House of Parliament” will follow the same pattern (January, February, March). What was missing until yesterday was an early date for presidential elections so the Egyptians can finally have their first truly democratic elections in decades. People don’t want another era of corrupt government and officials. They are worried that the army (who helped overthrow Mubarak) may be getting too comfortable in power so they’re reminding the army that its role is to help preparing for presidential elections... thanks to the protests over the weekend, we had an announcement yesterday that the presidential elections would be held in June and that the army had no intention of staying in power. This is positive news. Some people may feel this is not enough and may want the army to hand over the reins quicker but it's just a detail. The point is that we have a full schedule now.
But as mentioned above, the important thing for clarify is that this is not relevant to Hurghada & Sharm el Sheikh, which are in a different world both geographically and economically. For info, Cairo is 9 hours drive from Hurghada & Sharm el Sheikh.
