Egypt's Red Sea resorts are extremely popular with tourists from around the world, with many coming specifically to enjoy the crystal clear waters which are ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. However many tourists are now becoming more environmentally aware and are choosing greener holidays which give them the chance to stay in resorts and developments which have a low carbon footprint. The Egyptian government has recognised this fact and is to establish a department in the Ministry of Tourism which will promote sustainable and green development.
This is all part of a long-term plan to help promote eco-friendly practices within the tourism sector which is highly important to Egypt's economy. Before the revolution it was worth about $11 billion annually, and once things have settled down and there is no reason for this figure not to increase even further. Government Minister Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour has already met with a delegation from the German Agency for International Cooperation in order to discuss the financing of eco-friendly conversions to a number of hotels within the popular resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.
The tourism ministry launched an initiative to transform this resort into a green city which meets World Tourism Organisation guidelines back in 2009, and is also using the services of Bose International, a US-based architectural firm, to convert the resort into a low footprint eco-city. The company has already studied methods of reducing emissions from hotels, developments and cars, and will also look at ways to increase the amount of green space within the city, as well as alternative energies. Not surprisingly solar electricity is expected to play a considerable role, and is also expected that electric cars will be introduced in a bid to reduce emissions.
